Hockey!
« on: April 17, 2010, 01:40:26 PM »
Been pretty interesting so far.  I can't remember a year when so many home teams dropped their first game.  Most of the games have been very tight, one goal standoffs, which I think help the sport at this stage of the game.  If you're not that into hockey you probably won't watch a 5-0 pounding, but you might stay tuned to a close game, especially if there's OT potential.  I'm hoping that the Olympics created a small groundswell of interest for the sport in the U.S.;  Maybe an entertaining playoff year can garner more fans for the sport.  Anywho...

My preseason pick was Chicago and Washington in the finals, with Washington winning it.  Thing is, Varlomov didn't pan out the way I thought he would this year.  He did put together a nice string of performances before he got hurt.  He was hampered by that injury for awhile (which had me livid because when a player is listed as day to day you can't put them in your IR slots in my fantasy league, which I won  :toot:) and never really bounced back after that.  He played poorly down the stretch and Theodore played well.  I just have a very hard time believing that Theodore will maintain this performance throughout the playoffs.  I still like Chicago in the west, but I think the east is wide open for any of the top 4 seeds.

Well, enjoy the playoffs! Go Devils!

I had Washington vs San Jose in the cup, we'll see how that actually stands.  Good series so far, though.  (Devils and Flyers, that is.)  :shaqfu:

Yeah, it's always a tough series to call when those two play each other.  After tonight my gut tells me the flyers are gonna advance.  I don't know how Boucher figured out how to tend goal again, but he's been THE story in that series.

Haha, I know.  That was my knee-jerk reaction, but who wouldn't be excited by the potential there.  All in all he still produced down the stretch, even if it was a bit streaky.  Who knows, maybe it will still work out favorably for them.  I just watch those games and it seems like the Flyers are getting the job done when it really counts more often than the Devils are.  It is well within New Jersey's range of ability to win this series, my gut just tells me they won't.  Believe me, I hope I'm wrong.

In other fun news, how hilarious was that OT game winning own goal the Sharks scored on themselves?  Finding new and interesting ways to underachieve in the playoffs every year.  Go team!

You guys might want to tell Kovalchuck to calm down with the celebrating when scoring goals.  Also - a forward with 20+ minutes?  Give me a break.  He's the worst move the Devils have made, hands down.  What a tool.

Carcillo is such a bum, pretends to be a tough guy but won't go with Orr.

For real, if I was on that team I'd be too embarrassed to show my face in public for at least a few days.  Carter and Gagne both out and they did nothing?  Give me a break. The really sad thing is that as tepid as the Kovalchuk thing turned out to be he was the only one to score the last two games.  I've shelved my jerseys until at least September.  Boucher looks great so far, but I have a feeling Washington is gonna rattle his cage.  Also, did everyone see Boychuk hit Ellis the other night?  Good god.

That was a bullshit hit.  My fear is that with both Carter and Gags out now, we'll have no real depth on offense.  Still got Big Daddy Pronger, but only so much he can do.

You guys definitely need Giroux to keep playing like he has been.  I'm not sure about that hit, it looked pretty clean to me.  Please tell me you saw that Nashville-Chicago game.  Best game of the playoffs so far IMO.  I'm glad the Blackhawks are good again, definitely rooting for them and the 'Yotes out west.  Phoenix surprised me today, I thought the Wings were going to slam that door shut at home.

Habs, holy fuck!  Unless they completely break down against the pens that's gonna be a great series.  Montreal was VERY impressive in game 7.  Lots of blocked shots, hardly any rebounds, so good defensively.  Montreal is playing exemplary hockey right now, and Fleury has been uneven so far.  My initial guess is pens in 7, but after the first round and looking at who is left Montreal looks like the best team.  Inexperience will probably catch up with them at some point, but 2nd round seems too early.  They just played so well in game 7 in Washington's house that it's really hard to imagine them laying an egg against the pens.

I'd love to see the Habs roll over the Penns.  Boston is going to be easy potatoes, although we're out Ian Lapperrier (best penalty killer in the league) as well as Carter and Gagne.  Not good.
